Common access issues for eReserves in Canvas

Answer

Johns Hopkins recommends using an updated version of Firefox or Chrome for Canvas. See Canvas FAQ for Students for more information.

Sometimes you may click on eReserves, or a specific title in the readings list, and find you are unable to access that title or list due to 1) an error message or 2) a password-reset screen. There are no special passwords for eReserves.

Solutions

  1. First, try clearing your browser cache AND cookies.
  2. If that does not work, try switching to a new browser OR accessing your eReserves via this direct link that bypasses Canvas. This often solves the problems mentioned above.
  3. If accessing eReserves via Canvas remains your preference, try enabling "third party cookies."
  4. Note that some browsers, usually under a Privacy / Security setting, will allow you to make exceptions to allow cookies and site data for specific websites. For Canvas, you can use https://jhu.instructure.com as the site address.

Chrome

  1. Navigate to Settings > Privacy and Security > Third-party cookies within the Google Chrome web browser application or enter the URL chrome://settings/cookies in the browser to navigate directly to this page.
  2. Disable the Send a "Do Not Track" request with your browsing traffic option:

To access Ares content while in Incognito mode, change the default behavior from Block third-party cookies in Incognito mode to Allow third-party cookies:

Firefox

  1. Navigate to Settings > Privacy & Security in the Firefox web browser application.
  2. Set the Do Not Track setting on this page to Only when Firefox is set to block known trackers.
  3. If the Strict privacy profile is enabled on this page, switch to the Standard privacy profile or configure an appropriate Custom privacy profile that allows tracking content from websites:

Safari

  1. Navigate to Settings > Privacy within the Safari web browser application.
  2. Uncheck the Prevent cross-site tracking option:
