Borrow Direct vs. Interlibrary Loan

Answer

BorrowDirect gives current Hopkins faculty, students, and staff access to books from twelve partner libraries, including the Ivy League schools.

Start your search in Catalyst, the JH Libraries catalog. If the JH Libraries don’t have what you’re looking for, request it using Borrow Direct.

  • Loan period is 16 weeks
  • Expect delivery within five business days. You will receive an email when your request is available for pick-up.
  • Note that BorrowDirect books cannot be renewed, though you can request another copy.

If you are traveling to a city with a "BD" partner school, you can use that school's library. Please review individual library access and borrowing polices prior to your visit.

Interlibrary Loan, sometimes known as ILL, is best used for materials not available through Catalyst or BorrowDirect. Your Interlibrary Loan account has options for requesting books, articles, specific book chapter scans or theses and dissertations.

For returnable books, loan periods vary and delivery can take up to two weeks.
